Of all the things that have dropped through my front door since I moved into this new flat, this is definitely one of my favourites. Let’s look at the competition: bills, curry house menus, the local “MAN GROWS GIANT TURNIP” rag, a firework, a cat tied to a firework, cat excrement, human excrement, and two or three human body parts which suggest that someone known to the previous occupant of this flat has been kidnapped and slowly tortured (note to self: next time I move house, I must get my mail redirected). Yep, this album of exquisite, atmospheric, heavily-processed guitar is better than all those.
Although he has been around for absolutely ages, the first time I came across Peter Wright was late last year via reading about him playing with Stars of The Lid (you can actually hear that set here). I was slightly confused as to what a controversial, Official Secrets Act-flouting spycatcher (particularly one who had been dead for a decade) was doing dabbling in abstract musical fields, and some investigation was required in order to clear this matter up - disapointingly, his biography turned out to be slightly less MI5-y. So when I happened to chance upon a luvverly-packaged new collection of live recordings, I took a chance, and what do you know? I’ve been playing it non-stop ever since.
SOTL comparisons are inevitable given the sighing strings of the title track, which lead nicely into the dense ambience of “Submergedinice”, which becomes increasingly pock-marked with crackle and fuzz, before giving way to some street chatter. It gets even better when it gets angry: over ten minutes, “Ash” builds magnificently from a growl to a climax ravaged by Fennesz claws, and over twenty minutes “The Devil Wears Sunroof” works itself up into a blurry haze of drones and buried guitar sounds. Finally, the aptly-named “Blisters”collapses the album with some harsh riffing and satisfyingly whiter-than-white noise.
Have one drop on your doormat by picking up a copy of “Pretty Mushroom Clouds” from Peter’s website, Distant Bombs.
